Pepper prices in the domestic market today are still fluctuating at 152,000 - 153,000 VND/kg. In the world market, pepper prices in all countries are generally stable, except for Indonesia which continues to decrease.

At the end of the most recent trading session, the International Pepper Community (IPC) listed the price of Indonesian Lampung black pepper at 7,093 USD/ton, continuing to decrease slightly by 3 USD/ton compared to the previous day.

In other leading producing countries, prices were largely flat. Currently, Brazilian black pepper ASTA 570 is quoted at $6,650/ton, while Malaysian black pepper ASTA is at $9,700/ton.

In Vietnam, black pepper  export  prices  remained stable at 6,240 - 6,370 USD/ton for 500 g/l and 550 g/l.

According to   Nguoi Lao Dong  Newspaper , explaining the recent sharp increase in pepper prices, a member of the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association (VPSA) said that pepper prices increased because it was the end of the season.

Vietnam pepper harvest ended in May 2025 and most small-scale farmers sold their products because they could not keep them. Only large-scale, wealthy farmers kept their products and sold them in batches.

“The goods that businesses need to buy to deliver signed orders are running out, so the price must increase. An important factor is that the US applies a 40% transfer tax, so businesses also limit pepper  imports   for processing and export because it is not profitable,” this member informed.

Statistics show that at the beginning of the year, Vietnamese enterprises imported 3,000 - 4,000 tons of Brazilian pepper per month, but now they only import about 1,000 tons per month, so they have to increase domestic pepper purchases. Therefore, in the short term, pepper prices will continue to increase because enterprises have to buy goods and fulfill signed orders.

According to this source, in the first 8 months of 2025, pepper exports will surpass the 1 billion USD mark, the highest since 2018 but still not equal to the golden period of 2015-2016.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Environment said that in the first 8 months of 2025, Vietnam's agricultural, forestry and fishery exports continued to maintain positive growth momentum in many product groups and markets.

Of which, pepper exports in August 2025 are estimated at 21 thousand tons, worth 126.8 million USD, down 2.3% in volume and 10.8% in value compared to the previous month, but up 8.1% in volume and 8.6% in value compared to the same period last year.

In the first 8 months, total exports reached 165.7 thousand tons, worth 1.12 billion USD, down 9.8% in volume but up 26.9% in value. The average pepper export price reached 6,739.7 USD/ton, up sharply by 40.7%.

Pepper prices today  fluctuated between VND154,000 and VND155,000 per kilogram, up VND1,000 per kilogram from the previous day. In India, after pepper prices increased sharply, farmers’ interest in this crop has increased over the past 3-4 years.

According to  The Hindu Businessline , following a sharp rise in pepper prices, Indian farmers' interest in the crop has increased over the past 3–4 years.

 Venkataiah, a veteran coffee  farmer  in Chinabarada village, said he had just seen his next-door neighbour earn Rs 30,000 by selling a single bag of pepper. “They earn so much from just one bag of pepper? This has created a huge attraction not only for me but also for other farmers,” he said.

“If there are three takers, they can earn up to Rs 100,000, after deducting expenses, there is still about Rs 50,000 left,” he shared.

Pepper, intercropped with coffee, is becoming an important source of income for Adivasi farmers in the Eastern Ghats. While intercropping with coffee is common in many other regions, Adivasi farmers are only now realizing the importance of the spice as an income-generating crop.

Their interest in the crop has increased in the last 3–4 years, thanks to the high pepper prices. Currently, pepper is priced at around Rs 650/kg, compared to just Rs 450/kg for coffee.

Earlier, farmers were not very keen on pepper, but in the last 2–3 years, as prices have increased from Rs 400/kg in 2023 to Rs 650/kg now, their profits have improved significantly.

According to farmers, pepper has changed their financial outlook, as each acre can yield around 150–200 kg, providing a stable source of income.

Mr. P. Kannababu, 51, of Pedabarada village, 110 km from Visakhapatnam, intercropped pepper from the very beginning on a new one-acre coffee plantation.

Similarly, Mr. Satyanarayana D, another Adivasi farmer from the same village, is managing five acres of coffee and pepper, earning an average annual income of around Rs 200,000/acre from coffee and an additional Rs 60,000/acre from pepper.

Kalpana Kumari, Managing Director of the Girijan Corporation of Andhra Pradesh (GCC), said pepper would be the second crop after coffee to be certified organic. “Since pepper is grown in certified organic coffee plantations, certification for pepper will also be easier,” she said. The move is expected to help farmers fetch higher prices.

However, GCC does not purchase pepper because the market has a huge demand for this agricultural product.

Tata Consumer Products Limited, which has agreed to buy 10 tonnes of Araku organic coffee from GCC, has also expressed interest in sourcing pepper and other products once they are certified organic, said Thanga Srinivasa Rao, Senior Manager, Coffee, GCC.

Of the 250,000 acres of coffee grown in the Agency region, about 6,000 are currently certified organic. GCC is planning to expand organic certification to all coffee acreage in the next few years.

This morning, pepper prices in key production areas in Vietnam fluctuated slightly. The purchase price fluctuated between 149,500 - 152,000 VND/kg.

Specifically, pepper prices in Dak Lak and Dak Nong both reached 152,000 VND/kg, an increase of 2,000 VND/kg compared to yesterday.

Ba Ria - Vung Tau and Binh Phuoc both maintain the level of 150,000 VND/kg, an increase of 2,000 VND/kg.

Other localities such as Gia Lai increased by 1,900 VND/kg, reaching 149,500 VND/kg.

The 2025 crop year ends with an estimated output of 180,000 tons, down 10,000 tons compared to 2024. This limited supply is one of the important reasons helping Vietnamese pepper prices stay high.

Rising domestic and export pepper prices have helped Vietnam's pepper export turnover reach 1.06 billion USD by mid-August 2025, after only 7.5 months.

Many farmers have switched from small-scale production to participating in cooperatives to produce according to the chain. This helps them no longer depend on traders, and can sell products at better and more stable prices.

Experts say this price increase opens up positive prospects for Vietnamese farmers and businesses, especially as we enter the end of the year – the peak import season for major markets such as the US, Europe and China.

According to  Khmer Times , on August 20, the Cambodian Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) held a working meeting with the Cambodian Pepper and Spice Federation (CPSF) to discuss measures to facilitate exports and expand the market to new destinations.

CPSF presented a progress report and made some recommendations regarding prices and productivity. He noted that pepper prices have increased sharply in recent years, which is a positive sign.

“Pepper prices have increased but productivity has decreased due to climate change,” said Toch Bun Hour, Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Cambodia. “This decrease in productivity has caused some farmers to suffer losses despite higher prices. In terms of exports, Cambodia still depends heavily on its main market, Vietnam. However, the Federation is working to diversify into new markets, especially China and Europe, to reduce dependence on a single country.”

At the same time, CPSF also called on the Ministry of Agriculture to expand the registration of pepper growing areas to facilitate exports, reduce costs and improve the verification of statistics on cultivated areas and output nationwide, ensuring more accurate information for negotiations with foreign investors.

According to the Department of Plant Protection, Animal and Plant Hygiene and Quarantine, there are 126 pepper farms certified for Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), and efforts are continuing to register more farms.

The registration is supported by the EU-German-Cambodia Partnership Project on Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems (EU-German CAPSAFE), at no cost to the farm owners.

The Ministry has also supported the costs for some typical farmers, encouraged others to voluntarily register according to agricultural and organic standards, strengthened cooperation with relevant ministries and development partners to promote the pepper industry, cooperated with organizations to expand export markets, and strengthened internal capacity.

Recently, MAFF organized a training course on “Cashew and Pepper Production Chain” for more than 100 commune-level agricultural officials and key farmers in Kampot, Tbong Khmum and Kep provinces.

The training course aims to enhance the operational capacity of agricultural officials at commune and ward levels to better serve farmers and increase income from agricultural production, especially cashew and pepper — two key crops for the national economy and farmers' livelihoods.

Va Rutsan, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Commerce, said in June that Cambodia is developing a pepper policy to boost Cambodian pepper exports to the global market. “We are gathering as many opinions as possible to finalize this policy.”

“The top priority of the policy is to increase income for pepper growers across the provinces, while we also aim to boost exports,” he said.

Kampot pepper is famous for its unique flavor and is one of two pepper varieties in the world to have Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status, affirming the quality and origin of this pepper.

According to  Gia Lai Newspaper,  to anticipate market demand and increase income, some farmers in the western communes of Gia Lai province have boldly switched to growing green pepper in the off-season. This direction not only increases the value of the crop but also helps farmers proactively adapt to market fluctuations.

The idea of ​​growing off-season pepper was hatched by Mr. Cu Quoc Hung (village 6, Gao commune) in 2022. Mr. Hung said: Pepper prices have returned, so when planting new crops, he chose to grow Sri Lanka varieties, because of their outstanding growth ability, ease of care and high disease resistance. From researching and learning organic care techniques, combined with existing experience, he produces off-season green pepper by regulating irrigation water and fertilizing properly. Thanks to suitable soil, each pepper pole can harvest about 15 kg of fresh pepper to sell as green chains, while chains with lower fruit quality will be harvested and dried.

According to farmers, the technique applied to this new variety is to fertilize and water continuously to create good humidity so that the tree can produce fruit in batches and can be harvested year-round. Off-season products are mainly sold as green pepper chains to restaurants or resold to establishments that process pepper dishes such as pickled pepper and frozen pepper.

Off-season green pepper has a selling price 1.5 - 2 times higher than the main season and is currently fluctuating from 50,000 - 70,000 VND/kg. At some times in the time frame from April to July, it can reach 110 - 120 thousand VND/kg.

Realizing the increasing effectiveness of green pepper products, in addition to red pepper production, Gia Lai Red Pepper One Member Co., Ltd. (village 5, Kon Gang commune) has expanded the planting of about 4,000 pillars using Malaysian pepper varieties, and also provided seeds to dozens of people in the area to expand production linkages and consume off-season green pepper.

Mr. Tran Quang Son, Director of the Company, said: “Green pepper is usually harvested from August to October every year, then the remaining part is left to ripen, making black pepper or red pepper products. Growing green pepper not only makes the plant stronger but also brings high economic value.

In Kon Gang commune, many households have started to switch to growing new pepper varieties and applying the off-season planting model to improve efficiency. In the third year, pepper gardens have an average yield of about 12 kg fresh/pillar.

With the current productivity and selling price, each hectare of green pepper can earn a profit of 500 million VND/year or more, depending on the monoculture or intercropping method. The company has partners in the South who regularly purchase and export to Thailand, so the output is quite stable.

In the context of old varieties, used for many years, degenerating due to pests, diseases and the harsh impacts of climate change, many farmers have introduced new varieties into cultivation to increase productivity and quality of harvested products.

According to information from the Cambodian Ministry of Commerce, in the first half of 2025, Cambodia's pepper exports reached nearly 20 million USD, down 21.37% compared to the 25 million USD figure in the same period in 2024.
