Report of the pepper market and other spices in January, 2025

In January 2025, Vietnam exported 13,085 tons of pepper, black pepper reached 10,502 tons, white pepper reached 2,583 tons. Total export turnover reached 87.7 million USD , compared to December 2024, export volume decreased by 14.3% and compared to the same period in 2024, export decreased by 26.4%. The average export price of black pepper in the month reached 6,626 USD/ton, white pepper reached 8,467 USD/ton, up 2.3% for black pepper and 3.3% for white pepper compared to the previous month.

Meanwhile, the United States remained Vietnam’s largest pepper export market with 2,884 tons, down 36.0% compared to the previous month. Notably, exports to the German market increased by 122.0% to 910 tons.

•        This week, the price of pepper has increased rapidly from 154,000 VND to 165,000 VND, corresponding to a price increase of 7.14% in just the first week of February.
•        There is quite good demand from the Chinese market for white pepper and light berries pepper to extraction from the Indian market.
•        Other markets such as the US and the EU are also participating in purchasing black pepper with both long-distance and immediate orders.
•        The harvest season is continuing to progress very slowly due to a lack of labor and climate change.

Pepper prices today, February 9, 2025, in the domestic market increased sharply in key localities, trading from 150,500 - 153,000 VND/kg.

Specifically, pepper price today in Gia Lai is at 154,000 VND/kg.

Pepper prices today in the provinces of Dong Nai (153,500 VND/kg); Dak Lak (156,000 VND/kg); Dak Nong (157,000 VND/kg); Ba Ria - Vung Tau (155,000 VND/kg) and Binh Phuoc (156,000 VND/kg).

Thus, pepper prices today increased sharply in key growing areas, increasing by 3,000 - 4,000 VND/kg. The highest pepper price is at 157,000 VND/kg.

Overall, this year's output is estimated by sources to increase compared to 2024. With high prices at the beginning of the season like now, in 2025 pepper is expected to continue to exceed billion USD in exports, and may possibly set a record high in exports ever.

Based on the supply-demand balance, pepper prices in 2025 are expected to remain high due to a decrease in supply, while demand in major markets such as the US and Europe remains stable. Pepper demand in the food and spice processing industries remains the main driver of the market.

According to a recent report by Ptexim, Vietnam’s total pepper export volume in 2024 is 250,600 tons, indicating a significant supply. However, the harvest has been steadily declining over the past 3-4 years due to shrinking planting areas as farmers switch to more profitable crops such as coffee and durian.

In addition, land prices in Vietnam have increased sharply from 2020 to 2023, causing many farmers to convert pepper growing land into real estate projects.

Significant fluctuations in pepper prices have also prompted many farmers to adopt intercropping by growing other crops along with pepper. This approach has led to a significant decline in the area under monoculture pepper cultivation over the past 4–5 years.

This trend is expected to continue, with pepper growing areas decreasing further by 2025. Ptexim forecasts that Vietnam’s pepper output in 2025 will decrease by about 5-10% compared to 2024. At the same time, inventories are at a five-year low and Vietnam will continue to import more pepper from other countries for processing and production.

In the world market, at the end of the most recent trading session, the International Pepper Community (IPC) listed the price of Lampung black pepper (Indonesia) at 7,276 USD/ton; the price of Brazilian black pepper ASTA 570 at 6,500 USD/ton; the price of Kuching black pepper (Malaysia) ASTA at 9,000 USD/ton.

Muntok white pepper price is 9,770 USD/ton; Malaysian ASTA white pepper price is at 11,600 USD/ton.

Vietnam black pepper price is traded at 6,500 USD/ton for 500 g/l; 550 g/l at 6,650 USD/ton; white pepper price at 9,550 USD/ton.

The International Pepper Community assessed that the pepper market in the first week of February showed mixed reactions, with only domestic Malaysian white pepper reported to have declined. Despite the weakening of the Indian Rupee against the USD, domestic and international Indian pepper prices continued to increase this week.

Mr. Hoang Phuoc Binh - Vice President of Chu Se Pepper Association (Gia Lai) said that pepper prices often tend to increase in cycles. For example, the previous price increase cycle started in 2010 and peaked in 2015.

Currently, the pepper growing area in our country is about 113,000 hectares, with an estimated output of 190,000 tons. In 2024, businesses exported nearly 250,000 tons of pepper, worth 1.31 billion USD - a record in the past 8 years. Vietnam continues to hold the world's largest warehouse with output accounting for 40% and exports accounting for 60% globally.

Indonesian pepper suddenly increased sharply

Pepper prices today, the 4th day of Tet, remained stable at around 147,000 - 148,000 VND/kg. Meanwhile, the price of Indonesian pepper in the world market, especially white pepper, increased sharply in the last trading session.

In the domestic market

Recorded today,  domestic pepper prices continue to stabilize at 147,000 - 148,000 VND/kg.

Accordingly,  pepper prices  in Dak Lak and Dak Nong provinces reached the highest level of 148,000 VND/kg. Next was pepper prices in Gia Lai province at 147,500 VND/kg.

Pepper prices in other localities in the Southeast region such as Ba Ria - Vung Tau, Dong Nai and Binh Phuoc are lower at 147,000 VND/kg.

The market is likely to be active again after the Lunar New Year holiday when many localities enter the harvest period. In addition, pepper prices are also expected to increase due to reduced global supply while demand in the US and EU remains stable, and China is likely to return to the market.

According to statistics from the Vietnam Pepper and Spices Association (VPSA), pepper export turnover in 2024 will reach 1.3 billion USD, an increase of more than 45% compared to 2023, exceeding the expectations of Vietnamese pepper processing enterprises, contributing to bringing pepper back to the list of billion-dollar agricultural export products.

Among pepper exporting enterprises, Olam is at the top, followed by Phuc Sinh, Nedspice Vietnam, Haprosimex JSC and Tran Chau.

Responding to  VNA , Mr. Phan Minh Thong, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Phuc Sinh Joint Stock Company, said that in the 30-year export journey, pepper prices in Vietnam increased sharply from 2010 to their peak in 2015. At that time, pepper became a billion-dollar industry and the price of 1 ton of pepper was equivalent to 6.5 taels of gold, or 10,700 USD.

This was also the reason why pepper was called “black gold” at that time. With this price increase, pepper growers began to speculate. In 2015, many farmers still had 3 tons and 5 tons of pepper stored at home, expecting the price to increase to 250 million VND/ton before selling.

But the development of all things will decline after the peak, so soon after that, pepper prices turned around and continuously decreased. By 2019, pepper prices were only 36 million VND/ton, "evaporating" 85% in 3.5 years. The decline in pepper prices caused most pepper growers to be in dire straits, neglecting and switching crops, creating a situation where demand exceeds supply from 2023 until now, so pepper is in short supply again.

By the end of 2023, the country's pepper output will reach about 170,000 tons and will decrease to about 160,000 tons in 2024, which is nearly half of the peak of 300,000 tons in 2015. The small output has helped pepper prices rebound, increasing export value in 2024.

On the side of producers and cooperatives, Mr. Nguyen Tan Cong, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Nam Yang Cooperative (Gia Lai) said that currently, after going through many lessons learned, instead of choosing pure cultivation, people now focus on models of growing pepper intercropped, multicropped with coffee and fruit trees.

Developing pepper in the direction of intercropping and polyculture will be sustainable, thereby helping farmers reduce investment costs and limit disease risks, moving towards safe agriculture. At that time, people will not overuse pesticides and chemical fertilizers on crops, instead using biological products and organic fertilizers to bring durability to the garden, helping to improve the quality of pepper products to enter the world market.

However, according to experts, pepper prices in Vietnam are still stable at around 140,000 - 150,000 VND/kg in the last months of 2024 and early 2025. India, a major consumer, is also forecast to see a drop in output due to the impact of floods, leading farmers to limit investment and liquidate inventories as domestic prices fall.

Update pepper information

According to IPC, the average FOB price of black pepper from major producing countries in 2024 increased by about 45% compared to the previous year. Meanwhile, the average FOB price of white pepper recorded a lower increase of about 34%.

Brazil's FOB black pepper export price recorded a sharp increase compared to producing countries with an increase of 48.4%, from an average of 3,125 USD/ton in 2023 to 4,639 USD/ton in 2024.

In 2024, Malaysia also recorded an increase of 37% for FOB black pepper prices and 26% for white pepper, averaging USD 6,718/ton and USD 8,881/ton, respectively.

The FOB price of black pepper exported from India recorded an increase of 11%, the lowest increase among producing countries, from an average of 6,713 USD/ton in 2023 to 7,460 USD/ton in 2024. This is also the country with the highest pepper price in the world in 2024.

In line with the world's upward trend, Indonesia's FOB black pepper export price also recorded an increase of 53%, from an average of 3,824 USD/ton in 2023 to 5,855 USD/ton in 2024. Meanwhile, the FOB price of Indonesian white pepper increased by 26%, from an average of 6,212 USD/ton in 2023 to 7,852 USD/ton in 2024.

Also according to IPC data, the price of 500 g/l black pepper in Vietnam in 2024 will average 5,447 USD/ton, up 58.6% compared to 2023. In addition, the price of white pepper will increase by 61.3% and reach an average of 8,061 USD/ton.

According to the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association (VPSA), global pepper prices in 2025 are expected to remain high due to a decrease in supply, while demand in major markets such as the US and Europe remains stable. The demand for pepper in the food and spice processing industries remains the main driver of the market.
