Many experts believe that in the coming years, global pepper production will not be enough to meet increasing consumer demand. Therefore, pepper prices are expected to increase sharply from 2024, opening a new period of development for this industry in Vietnam.
Currently, pepper farmers in Vietnam are showing more composure in the context of rising prices. Instead of massively expanding the area of pepper cultivation, they are focusing on quality, switching to sustainable farming and applying intercropping methods to reduce costs and better adapt to climate change.
Ms. Hoang Thi Lien - President of the Vietnam Pepper Association (VPSA), said that with the current situation, global pepper output is still not enough to meet the expected increase in demand in the next 3-5 years. In Vietnam, pepper, a strong crop, is entering a new price increase cycle to compensate for years of extremely low prices.
Mr. Hoang Phuoc Binh - Vice President of Chu Se Pepper Association (Gia Lai) said that pepper prices often tend to increase in cycles. For example, the previous price increase cycle started in 2010 and peaked in 2015.

By the end of 2024, businesses in the pepper industry recorded strong growth rates of 32-68%, with some companies even seeing a spike in export revenue of 150% compared to 2023. Farmers also had a bumper year, earning 60,000-100,000 VND when selling 1 kg of pepper.
According to records, after the Lunar New Year holiday, local farmers started harvesting the early-ripening pepper crop in some areas. Most of the pepper acreage will be harvested immediately after that. This year's harvest is estimated to be slower than previous years due to unfavorable weather conditions last year.
Currently, the pepper growing area in our country is about 113,000 hectares, with an estimated output of 190,000 tons. In 2024, businesses exported nearly 250,000 tons of pepper, worth 1.31 billion USD - a record in the past 8 years. Vietnam continues to hold the world's largest warehouse with output accounting for 40% and exports accounting for 60% globally.

Indonesia, with its stable output, is emerging as a potential supplier, but cannot fully meet global consumption demand.
Meanwhile, China, with low pepper inventories, is expected to boost imports right after the Lunar New Year, creating the possibility of price increases in the coming time, especially when Vietnam begins to harvest the main crop.
