Update pepper information

According to data from the Indian Ministry of Commerce, the country's pepper  exports   in the 11 months of 2024 reached 18,196 tons, up 30% over the same period in 2023.

However, the country also  imported   43,879 tons of pepper of all kinds during the same period, up 37.8%. The main sources of pepper supply were Sri Lanka and Vietnam, with volumes reaching 21,894 tons and 9,911 tons, up 2.5% and 75.4% over the same period in 2023.

Despite playing a vital role in global trade, India's black pepper exports have been declining over the past several decades, Thehindubusinessline  reported.

According to a study from Kerala Agricultural University, duty-free import of black pepper from Vietnam via Sri Lanka under the South Asian Free Trade Agreement (SAFTA) has made imported black pepper cheaper than domestic prices.

As a result, exporters specializing in value-added products have become increasingly dependent on imported pepper. This, coupled with the increase in global pepper production, has led to a fall in prices in the Indian market, negatively impacting smallholder farmers.

Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu are the leading pepper producing states in India, with Karnataka having the highest average yield. In Kerala, Idukki district leads in terms of area, production and productivity. However, the pace of expansion of pepper cultivation in Kerala has slowed down due to ageing of the crop, poor management and harvesting challenges.

In that context, domestic consumption is considered the "savior" of the Indian pepper industry.

Once the world leader in black pepper production and export, with 75% of its output exported in the 1980s, the share has fallen to 40% in the last decade. Domestic consumption now accounts for more than 80% of India’s total pepper production, largely due to the liberalization of trade policies.

After 2000, there has been a significant change in the composition of black pepper exports from India. Earlier, the majority of pepper exported was unground pepper. Currently, nearly 50% of the total value of black pepper exports from India comes from ground or milled products.

The growth rate of black pepper exports has been declining over the decades, while the growth rate of imports has been increasing. India’s black pepper exports have become more diversified, showing a decline in the share of raw products and an increase in the share of value-added processed products.
