Coffee prices stable at high levels

At the London Stock Exchange, at 5:00 a.m. on April 28, 2025, Robusta coffee prices closed the session with a steady trend, fluctuating between 5,160 - 5,488 USD/ton compared to the previous session. Specifically, the coffee price for delivery in July 2025 reached 5,415 USD/ton; September 2025 at 5,363 USD/ton; November 2025 recorded 5,298 USD/ton and January 2026 reached 5,210 USD/ton.

In New York, the price of Arabica coffee in the early morning of April 28 increased slightly, ranging from 370.95 to 410.50 cents/lb. Specifically, the futures price for July 2025 closed at 399.00 cents/lb; September 2025 reached 392.10 cents/lb; December 2025 reached 383.85 cents/lb and March 2026 recorded 377.15 cents/lb.

At the end of the session, the price of Brazilian Arabica coffee showed stability, fluctuating between 470.00 - 521.75 USD/ton, equivalent to the previous session. Specifically, the May 2025 term reached 521.75 USD/ton; July 2025 reached 504.50 USD/ton; September 2025 recorded 480.00 USD/ton and December 2025 was 470.00 USD/ton.

In the domestic market, coffee prices in the Central Highlands on the morning of April 28, 2025 were recorded unchanged compared to the previous slight adjustment session, with an average purchase price of VND 130,600/kg.

Specifically, this morning coffee price in Dak Lak was purchased at 130,700 VND/kg; in Lam Dong it was 130,000 VND/kg; in Gia Lai it was 130,500 VND/kg and in Dak Nong it was 130,700 VND/kg.

Last week, coffee prices in the Central Highlands recorded alternating increases and decreases, but overall for the week, prices increased by VND1,000/kg compared to the previous week.

In the first quarter, Vietnam exported 32,395 tons of coffee to the US market, earning a turnover of 180.3 million USD. Compared to the first quarter of 2024, the export volume decreased by 13%, but the value increased sharply by 51% thanks to improved selling prices.

According to data from the General Department of Vietnam Customs, the total volume of coffee exported nationwide in the first quarter of 2025 reached 495,780 tons, with a value of 2.81 billion USD. Compared to the same period last year, the export volume decreased by 15.3%, but the turnover increased by 45.8% due to international coffee prices remaining at high levels.

Experts say that the current coffee market is fluctuating unpredictably under the influence of many intertwined macro and micro factors.

First, global supply is a key factor. Brazil, the leading Arabica producer, entered the 2024/25 crop year expecting a bumper crop thanks to favorable weather, raising concerns about oversupply and putting downward pressure on prices.

Meanwhile, Vietnam – the world’s largest Robusta exporter – has seen output decline due to the prolonged impact of El Niño, which has been particularly severe in the Central Highlands. However, coffee inventories among farmers remain abundant, ensuring uninterrupted supply. At the same time, global financial factors are also strongly influencing the coffee market.

Combining the above factors, the coffee market is entering a short-term adjustment period, while the medium-term trend will depend largely on the weather and demand from major importing countries.

In Vietnam, prolonged drought in the Central Highlands is severely affecting the coffee crop, causing farmers in Dak Nong to face a shortage of irrigation water during the peak of the dry season.

On the other hand, the EU anti-deforestation regulation (EUDR) of the European Union is putting more pressure on major coffee exporting countries such as Vietnam, Brazil, Colombia and Indonesia. Failure to meet the EUDR standard could reduce the supply of coffee to the EU market, leading to a risk of global shortages and pushing up coffee prices.

Pepper prices are stable

According to records at 5:00 a.m. on April 28, 2025, the domestic pepper market continued to be stable and flat compared to the previous session, with the average purchase price in key areas reaching 155,300 VND/kg.

Specifically, pepper prices in Gia Lai this morning were stable and unchanged from yesterday, currently being purchased at 154,500 VND/kg.

Similarly, pepper prices in Ba Ria - Vung Tau continue to be stable, with the current purchase price being 155,000 VND/kg.

In Binh Phuoc, pepper prices have not fluctuated compared to the previous session, currently maintaining a purchase price of 155,000 VND/kg.

Pepper prices in Dak Nong and Dak Lak have a stable trend, remaining at a high level of 156,000 VND/kg in each locality.

According to the update at 5:00 a.m. on April 28, 2025 from the International Pepper Community (IPC), world pepper prices are showing a stable and sideways trend.

In detail, IPC listed the price of Lampung black pepper (Indonesia) at 7,126 USD/ton; while Muntok white pepper was traded at 9,643 USD/ton.

In Malaysia, the pepper market has stabilized after many adjustment sessions, with ASTA black pepper price reaching 9,300 USD/ton and ASTA white pepper reaching 11,900 USD/ton.

Pepper prices in Brazil remained unchanged from the previous session, with the current purchase price reaching 6,900 USD/ton.

Meanwhile, the Vietnamese pepper market remains stable, with the price of 500 g/l black pepper reaching 6,800 USD/ton, 550 g/l at 6,900 USD/ton, and white pepper at 9,800 USD/ton.

Overall, last week, although the domestic pepper market had some volatile sessions, in general, there were not many changes compared to last week.

Specifically, only pepper prices in Gia Lai recorded a slight decrease of 500 VND/kg, while pepper prices in other provinces and cities remained unchanged.

According to the Vietnam Pepper and Spices Association (VPSA), global pepper output in 2025 is expected to continue to decrease in many countries such as India, Indonesia and Sri Lanka.

The main reasons are low pepper growing profits, unfavorable weather conditions and increasing production costs. IPC estimates that world pepper production will decrease by 6.1% in 2025, in the context of increasing demand, contributing to keeping pepper prices high.

In Brazil, pepper output in 2025 is expected to reach 85,000-90,000 tons, up from 75,000 tons in 2024. The average export price of black pepper from Brazil in the first quarter reached 6,299 USD/ton, up 82.8% over the same period last year, but down slightly by 2.7% compared to the fourth quarter of 2024.

Indonesia recorded a 6% increase in pepper production in 2024, reaching 69,000 tons, but is forecast to decrease by 8.7% in 2025 due to weather impacts. Indonesia's average FOB black pepper price in the first quarter reached USD 7,201/ton, up 80% year-on-year and 7% quarter-on-quarter; while white pepper reached USD 9,807/ton, up 59% year-on-year and 8% quarter-on-quarter in 2024, thanks to reduced inventories.

In India, pepper production in 2025 is forecast to decline sharply by about 38% to about 78,000 tons due to reduced planting area and bad weather in Karnataka. The average FOB export price of black pepper in the first quarter of 2025 in India reached 7,813 USD/ton, up 16% over the same period last year, the lowest among major producing countries.

Malaysia recorded the strongest price increase in Q1/2025, with black pepper export prices increasing by 89% year-on-year and 9% compared to Q4/2024. White pepper prices also increased by 62% compared to Q1/2024.

Update pepper information

The Import  -Export Department  (Ministry of Industry and Trade) said the global pepper market is facing challenges due to a decline in production in major producing countries such as Indonesia and India. The main causes are climate change, disease and high input costs.

Despite the downward adjustment in pepper prices, demand is still increasing. Vietnam, as the leading pepper supplier, is in a great position to meet this demand.

In the domestic market, pepper prices fell in early April due to pressure from increased supply amid the new harvest. Traders and farmers are worried about the ability to consume products in the coming time, especially when there is information about tariffs from the US. This has caused many farmers and exporters to decide to sell at lower prices to minimize risks.

The US's 90-day suspension of reciprocal tariffs is considered a positive signal for the pepper industry, helping pepper prices potentially increase again in the near future.

According to the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association (VPSA), from now until the end of the year, supply and demand will remain the most important factor. Whether the US imposes tariffs or not, the global market is still in short supply, which will support pepper prices to increase again in the medium and long term.

In a recent report by Ptexim, the company said demand has improved in many markets such as Asia, the Middle East, the EU and the US. China has also bought, but the volume is insignificant.

The market has stabilized after major fluctuations following the shock of US tariffs. The 90-day US tariff delay has boosted international buying activity, but US buyers remain cautious amid uncertainty over tariff policy.

Pepper harvest in Vietnam is in its final stages nationwide. In Dak Nong – Vietnam’s main pepper producing region, harvesting is 100% complete. Meanwhile, Dak Lak – which accounts for about 30% of the country’s pepper output – has reached 80-90% harvest progress.

Particularly in the pepper growing area of Quang Tri with an output of about 1,000 tons per year, this year's output is expected to decrease by 60-70% due to unfavorable weather.

Although the harvest has been completed in many localities, the supply in the domestic market in Vietnam is still clearly limited because farmers are hoarding and not selling. Ptexim believes that the domestic pepper price is expected to reach about 160,000 VND/kg in the next few weeks.

Update pepper information

According to Chinese Customs data, in the first two months of the year, China  imported   a total of 1,230 tons of pepper, equivalent to a value of 8.6 million USD, an increase of 2.3 times in volume and 3.3 times in value compared to the same period last year.

The two largest suppliers to the Chinese market continued to be Indonesia and Vietnam, with import volumes reaching 581 tons and 416 tons, respectively. Compared to the same period, pepper volume from Indonesia increased sharply by 227%, while that from Vietnam increased by 58.8%. In terms of market share, Indonesia accounted for 47.2% of China's total pepper imports, while Vietnam accounted for 33.9%.

Notably, the amount of pepper imported from Brazil - the next largest market - increased more than 10 times over the same period, reaching 162 tons, accounting for 13.2% of the market share.

The average price of pepper exported from Vietnam to China in the first two months of the year reached 7,123 USD/ton, up 76.5% over the same period last year. Meanwhile, the price of pepper from Indonesia also increased by 38.5%, reaching 7,178 USD/ton.

According to the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association (VPSA), Vietnam's pepper exports to the Chinese market in the first quarter increased by 87.8% over the same period last year, reaching 2,034 tons. However, compared to the same period in 2023, the import volume was still 92.2% lower.

China has risen to the fourth position as Vietnam's largest pepper export market with its market share increasing to 4.3% from 1.9% in the same period.

VPSA said that Vietnam's pepper exports to China in the first quarter of this year increased sharply compared to the same period in 2024. This shows that pepper reserves in China have dropped to a low level.

However, pepper exports to China are currently limited due to the Chinese Customs' policy of tightening border trade exports. Meanwhile, if pepper is exported by sea, the cost will increase, so Chinese importers are not ready yet.

Update pepper information

According to VOV, in the context of Vietnam's export activities being under pressure from a 46% reciprocal tax, the tax may be applied to the pepper spice industry, so there is immediately a situation of farmers hoarding goods waiting for pepper prices to peak.

Mr. Ngo Ba Luong, Manager of the Southern Pepper Material Area of Son Ha Spices Company, said that most of the company's pepper output is exported to the US and EU. Therefore, many pepper and spice businesses are lending their warehouses to farmers and taking advantage of the old tax rate to export goods, avoiding congestion with contracts signed since 2024.

Mr. Luong said: “We are also trying to adapt, some partners are also urging us to deliver within 90 days. Knowing that our government is negotiating, I hope the negotiations between the two countries go well. As for our business side, we also regularly exchange with partners and customers to find ways to resolve the situation for quick trade.”

According to information from Ms. Hoang Thi Lien, President of the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association (VPSA), in the first quarter of 2025, Vietnam exported over 47,600 tons of pepper, reaching a turnover of over 326 million USD. Although output decreased by more than 16%, value increased sharply by nearly 39% over the same period.

The US continues to be the largest pepper spice export market, accounting for about 25% of total turnover and importing up to 77% of pepper from Vietnam. However, the pepper industry is facing a major challenge as the US has imposed a 10%  import  tax  . This has caused some US buyers to suspend transactions, increasing competitive pressure with pepper from Brazil and Indonesia, countries with lower tax rates.

Ms. Lien said that it is necessary to take advantage of the maximum 90 days of temporary suspension of the 46% reciprocal tax to speed up delivery. At the same time, businesses must proactively expand their markets to Europe, Asia and the Middle East to avoid dependence on the US market, which is increasingly sensitive to prices and taxes.

Agricultural product prices on April 21, 2025: Coffee and pepper prices remain unchanged

DNVN - The agricultural market on the first day of the week recorded stability when coffee and pepper continued to move sideways compared to the previous session, in which coffee was still purchased at an average of 129,600 VND/kg.

Tạp chí Doanh Nghiệp21/04/2025

In the first trading session on April 21, 2025, coffee prices remained unchanged from the previous session, with the average purchase price remaining at VND129,600/kg. Pepper prices continued to hold steady after a recent sharp decline.

On April 20, 2025, the agricultural market was stable with coffee and pepper prices remaining at high levels.
A day before, on April 19, 2025, both coffee and pepper prices simultaneously turned sharply down.
On April 18, 2025, the two main commodities, coffee and pepper, continued to increase slightly.

Of which, the delivery price for May 2025 was 5,253 USD/ton; July 2025 was 5,277 USD/ton; September 2025 was 5,211 USD/ton and November 2025 was 5,142 USD/ton.

The New York Stock Exchange also recorded a stable level of Arabica coffee on the morning of April 21, when the price did not fluctuate much, ranging from 353.50 to 380.90 cents/lb. Specific prices by term: May 2025 is 375.50 cents/lb; July 2025 is 372.60 cents/lb; September 2025 is 366.05 cents/lb and December 2025 is 358.70 cents/lb.

On the morning of April 21, 2025, domestic coffee prices in the Central Highlands remained stable compared to the previous day, with an average purchase price of VND 129,600/kg.

Details by province: in Dak Lak, the current coffee price is 129,700 VND/kg; in Lam Dong it is 129,000 VND/kg; Gia Lai recorded 129,500 VND/kg and Dak Nong is buying at 129,700 VND/kg.

Domestically, coffee prices in the Central Highlands last week recorded trading levels of VND129,500 - 129,700/kg, an increase of VND4,500 - 5,300/kg compared to the previous week. Globally, coffee prices on the London and New York exchanges both increased by 3 - 5% during the same period.

The London Stock Exchange is currently closed for the Easter holiday in many major countries until Monday. Meanwhile, the New York Stock Exchange is also closed today and will resume trading for a half day next Monday.

Safras & Mercado has updated its forecast for Brazil’s coffee production in 2025–26, reversing its initial assessment of a decline, raising its arabica output from 38.35 million bags to around 40 million bags, or even higher. While total production is still lower than last year, the decline is considered less significant than initially predicted.

In Vietnam, prolonged drought in some areas of the Central Highlands is negatively affecting this year’s coffee crop. Farmers in Dak Nong are facing many difficulties when facing a serious shortage of irrigation water in the middle of the dry season.

Many businesses said they will have to change their business strategies to adapt to the situation, such as boosting domestic exports, increasing product value and expanding markets to avoid being passive.

The Import-Export Department - Ministry of Industry and Trade assessed that Vietnam's coffee exports in the short term will continue to have a positive trend.

However, in the long term, Vietnamese coffee exports may face obstacles due to a decrease in domestic supply at the end of the season, pressure from the new harvest in Brazil and changes in tariff policies.

Meanwhile, pepper prices remain stable.

Pepper prices in the domestic market recorded at 5:00 a.m. on April 21, 2025 remained unchanged after the previous sharp decline. Currently, the average purchase price is 155,400 VND/kg in key areas.

In Gia Lai province, pepper prices remained the same as the previous day, currently at 155,000 VND/kg.

In Ba Ria - Vung Tau area, the market fluctuates little and prices remain high, currently pepper is purchased at 155,000 VND/kg.

In Binh Phuoc, pepper prices remain stable as in the previous session, currently being purchased at 155,000 VND/kg.

Pepper prices in Dak Nong and Dak Lak remain stable after the latest decline, being purchased at VND156,000/kg in both localities.

The international pepper market situation updated at 5:00 a.m. on April 21, 2025 from IPC shows that prices remain stable after many consecutive sessions of increase and decrease.

Specifically, the price of Lampung black pepper (Indonesia) is currently at 7,056 USD/ton; Muntok white pepper from the same country is traded at 9,641 USD/ton.

Malaysian pepper prices also remained stable, currently ASTA black pepper is sold at 9,600 USD/ton; ASTA white pepper is priced at 12,100 USD/ton.

Brazilian pepper prices stabilized after the previous increase, currently trading at $6,900/ton.

Vietnam's pepper export prices are currently unchanged from the previous sharp increase. Specifically, black pepper of 500 g/l is priced at 6,800 USD/ton, 550 g/l is priced at 6,900 USD/ton and white pepper is being sold at 9,800 USD/ton.

Last week, domestic pepper prices tended to increase in the middle of the week but quickly adjusted down towards the end of the week.

Pepper prices in Dak Nong and Dak Lak decreased by VND500 and VND1,000/kg respectively compared to last week, while Gia Lai and Binh Phuoc recorded an increase of VND1,000/kg. In Ba Ria – Vung Tau and Dong Nai, pepper prices remained unchanged.

The domestic pepper market is currently experiencing slight fluctuations as it enters the peak harvest season. However, prices remain stable thanks to support from many factors. Although it is the main harvest season, the amount of pepper brought to the market is not much because farmers tend to hoard their products thanks to good income from the coffee crop. In addition, purchasing power from speculators and traders also contributes to maintaining current prices.

2025 Annual Public-Private Partnership Group Conference organised by the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association

HCM City (VNS/VNA) - Pepper exporters need to adapt to the rapid and unpredictable developments in global trade, tapping markets with room for growth and enhancing product quality to maintain competitiveness, a conference heard in Ho Chi Minh City late last week.

Speaking at the 2025 Annual Public-Private Partnership Group Conference organised by the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association, Le Viet Anh, the VPSA’s chief of office, reported that in the first quarter Vietnam exported 39,853 tonnes of black pepper and 7,807 tonnes of white pepper for 326.6 million USD.

It represented a 16.1% drop in volume but a 38.6% jump in value year-on-year on the back of soaring global prices.

The US remained Vietnam’s largest buyer despite a 32.6% drop in volume to 10,278 tonnes, accounting for 25% of export value.

Other top markets included India (3,370 tonnes, down 11.2%), Germany (3,358 tonnes, down 9.3%), and the UAE (2,757 tonnes, up 15.2%).

Shipments to China jumped by 87.8% to 2,034 tonnes.

According to the association, the industry is facing significant headwinds, especially the US’s imposition of a 10% tariff and a 46% reciprocal tariff on certain Vietnamese goods.

Vietnam has a 90-day negotiation window during which Washington will not impose the reciprocal tariffs.

VPSA Chairwoman Hoang Thi Lien said: “Businesses are cautious and holding off major export decisions while awaiting the outcome of the negotiations.

“If the negotiations fail to bring down tariffs, Vietnamese exporters could lose market share in the US to Brazil and Indonesia.

“The pepper industry is hoping that the Government will negotiate to reduce the reciprocal tariffs to the lowest possible levels.”

She urged businesses to maximise delivery during the 90-day grace period and proactively explore alternative markets like Europe, Asia and the Middle East.

“If, after negotiations, the countervailing tariffs on Vietnamese pepper remain higher than those of competitors, Vietnam’s market share in the US will likely shrink.”

The VPSA said total pepper imports of European countries in 2024 increased by 20% compared to 2023 to 120,657 tonnes. Vietnam's share of pepper exports to Europe also steadily increased over the years, rising from 44.6% in 2022 to 51.1% in 2023 and 52.1% in 2024.

It noted that the EU remains a highly demanding market with stringent quality, traceability and technical compliance requirements, especially for premium products like white and organic pepper, meaning Vietnamese exporters must constantly improve their quality.

Sustainability and public-private cooperation

Huynh Tien Dung, country director of IDH Vietnam (Initiative for Sustainable Trade in Vietnam), highlighted the joint efforts made by the Public-Private Partnership Working Group on Pepper and Spices in the past year for supporting sustainable pepper and spices production.

This year marks the conclusion of the group’s 2021–2025 strategic phase, during which progress has been made in improving farming practices, building farmer capacity, fostering dialogue between public and private sectors, and strengthening ties with international industry associations like the European Spice Association and the American Spice Trade Association, he said.

Looking ahead, the pepper sector faces ongoing risks, from inflation and geopolitical instability to increasing market demands for transparency, traceability and sustainable practices, trends that make it more important than ever to reinforce cooperation frameworks and develop a resilient strategy for 2026–2030, he said.

He shared IDH's vision for the next strategic phase: boosting commercial value through quality improvement, traceability and income diversification, particularly by promoting intercropping of pepper and coffee in the Central Highlands. It also aims to stabilise smallholder livelihoods by integrating sustainable production systems and expanding market and financial access, enhance environmental resilience by promoting regenerative agriculture, increasing carbon absorption, improving biodiversity, and enabling more accurate emissions tracking across pepper–coffee intercropping systems./.
