Update pepper information

Many previous forecasts have said that in the next few years, global pepper production will still not be enough to meet consumer demand. Therefore, prices will start to increase sharply from 2024, helping this industry in Vietnam enter a new golden age.

“With the current situation, global pepper production cannot meet the increasing demand in the next 3-5 years. In our country, this strong grain is entering a new price increase cycle, making up for the years when prices were too low,” said Ms. Hoang Thi Lien, Chairwoman of the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association (VPSA).

In pepper growing areas in our country, farmers are also calmer in the face of price fever. Instead of growing pepper purely and massively expanding the area, they now focus more on quality, switch to sustainable farming, choose intercropping to reduce investment costs and adapt to climate change.

In addition to exporting  raw products , businesses  also aim to make value-added products to target niche markets, while building a high-quality Vietnamese pepper brand, according to  Vietnamnet Newspaper .

Domestic pepper price today

Today's pepper price was updated at 4:30 a.m. on February 1, 2025 as follows: The domestic pepper market remains stable, with little fluctuation and anchored at a fairly high level. Domestic pepper price updated on February 1, 2025

The Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association forecasts that global pepper output in 2025 will continue to decrease compared to 2024, marking the fourth consecutive year of decline since 2022. This reflects the fact that pepper is no longer the main crop of many farmers. In addition, climate change with extreme weather events has reduced productivity and increased the cost of maintaining pepper production.

However, according to experts, pepper prices in Vietnam are still stable at around 140,000 - 150,000 VND/kg in the last months of 2024 and early 2025. This is a signal that prices will not fluctuate strongly, even though the market is facing a decrease in output from some major producing countries.

Global pepper supply will continue to decline in 2025, while demand from major markets such as the US and Europe will remain stable, creating momentum for prices to remain high. Meanwhile, China is currently facing low pepper inventories and may start buying again after the Lunar New Year, when Vietnam's main harvest begins.

Farmers in Gia Lai province harvest pepper.

In 2024, China will reduce pepper imports from Vietnam by 82.4% but increase imports from Indonesia by 76.8%. However, this increase in imports is still not enough to meet total consumption demand in China. Pepper inventories in this market are low, while expectations of a price decrease have not come true as prices have remained stable at VND140,000/kg for the past 3 months. It is forecasted that China will probably wait until Vietnam's main harvest (after Tet) to start buying again.

Brazil’s pepper output is forecast to recover in 2025, while Indonesia may see a drop in output due to investment difficulties and unfavorable weather conditions. India, a major consumer, is also forecast to see a drop in output due to the impact of floods, leading farmers to limit investment and liquidate inventories as domestic prices fall.

Update pepper information

According to IPC, in 2023 India surpassed Brazil to become the second largest pepper producing country in the world, however, most of India's pepper production is consumed domestically.

In 2024, India's pepper output will reach 125,000 tons and is the country with the highest increase in pepper production of about 7% (8,000 tons) compared to 2023.

However, the IPC forecasts that the situation will not be optimistic in 2025 when the output reduction could be up to 38%. The reason is the impact of floods and rains, leading to farmers limiting investment and liquidating inventories when domestic prices decrease.

As of November 2024, India exported 18,196 tons of pepper, an increase of 30% (4,200 tons) compared to 13,997 tons in the same period in 2023. Of which, the US is the largest export market with a volume of 7,130 tons, a sharp increase of 39.2% over the same period.

Meanwhile, India also  imported   43,879 tons of pepper from other countries in the first 11 months of 2024, a sharp increase of 37.8% compared to the same period in 2023. Sri Lanka, Vietnam and Brazil are the three main suppliers to India. Accordingly, imports from Sri Lanka reached 21,886 tons, up 75.3%; from Vietnam reached 9,809 tons, up 2%; from Brazil reached 6,466 tons, up 39.8%.

Domestic consumption of pepper increased significantly last year to 131,000 tonnes due to increased demand from masala manufacturers, the Indian Pepper and Spices Trade Association (IPSTA) said.

According to IPC data, the FOB export price of black pepper from India recorded an increase of 11%, the lowest increase among producing countries, from an average of USD 6,713/ton in 2023 to USD 7,460/ton in 2024.

According to VietnamBiz.vn

Can the upward momentum of pepper prices be maintained in 2025?

Can the upward momentum of pepper prices be maintained in 2025?

Declining production is expected to be the main driver for pepper prices in 2025.

Pepper prices  increase for second consecutive year

In 2024, the pepper market recorded the second consecutive year of strong growth in price and export  turnover . Accordingly, domestic pepper prices at the end of this year nearly doubled compared to the beginning of the year to 140,000 VND/kg.

 Source: Giatieu.com (H.My compiled)

Regarding consumption, Vietnam exported 250,600 tons of pepper of all kinds, earning 1.3 billion USD, down 5.1% in volume but up 45.4% in value compared to the previous year. The main reason is that the average export price of black pepper in 2024 reached 5,154 USD/ton, up 49.7% and white pepper reached 6,884 USD/ton, up 38.9% compared to last year.

Declining manufacturing activity has contributed to pushing up domestic and export prices in recent times.

Source: General Department of Customs (compiled by H.Mị)

According to the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association (VPSA), unfavorable weather conditions have negatively affected pepper production. In Dak Nong, the capital of Vietnam’s pepper, output was recorded at the same level as last year.

In addition, the trend of crop conversion is also affecting output. Typically, in Dak Lak province, the province with the second largest pepper area and output in the country, it is assessed that it has decreased as people switch to growing durian and there is not much new planting.

It is expected that farmers will start harvesting pepper after Tet and it will last until the end of April.

Talking to us at the VPSA summary conference held on January 16, Mr. Thai Nhu Hiep - Chairman of the Board of Directors and Director of Vinh Hiep Company Limited, said that in recent years, the Central Highlands has had plants that have brought good economic efficiency, including coffee, durian, etc. As for pepper, although it also brings very high values, the cost of land improvement is very high, and this work is very difficult and risky. Therefore, the pepper growing area in Vietnam is increasingly narrowing.

Major pepper growing countries such as Indonesia and Brazil also recognize that growing  coffee   is more efficient and profitable. At the same time, coffee consumption is increasing while supply is decreasing. As for pepper, consumer demand has not increased at all, and price increases sometimes come from speculation and resale between traders.

“When prices are high, people can abstain from using pepper but cannot abstain from drinking coffee,” said Mr. Hiep.

Supply is decreasing, supporting pepper prices

The Chairman of Vinh Hiep Company believes that the trend of increasing export value but decreasing export volume will continue in 2025 when the world's inventory is not much left. Meanwhile, in Vietnam, the goods are mainly in the hands of speculators. They have been buying since the price was around 110,000 VND/kg. These people use money from taking profits from other agricultural products that have just experienced a hot period such as coffee, durian, ... to buy pepper.

“Speculators think that pepper prices could reach VND200,000/kg in 2025-2026. We cannot judge whether that view is right or wrong, but we can clearly see that output is gradually decreasing,” said Mr. Hiep.

According to VPSA's forecast, global pepper output in 2025 will continue to decrease compared to 2024, marking the fourth consecutive year of decline since 2022. This reflects the fact that pepper is no longer the main crop of many farmers, especially in the context of the significant increase in economic value of other crops such as durian, coffee and oil palm. In addition, climate change with extreme weather events has reduced productivity and increased the cost of maintaining pepper production.

“Global pepper prices in 2025 are expected to remain high due to reduced supply, while demand in major markets such as the US and Europe remains stable. Demand for pepper in the food and spice processing industries remains the main driver of the market,” VPSA said.

Regarding export activities, Mr. Hiep said that currently, businesses have also learned from the previous crop year when they only sign export contracts when they are sure they have purchased the goods.

“In the previous crop year, many businesses “short-sold” pepper, meaning they signed sales contracts and then purchased pepper from farmers. However, last year, farmers’ economic life improved a lot, so the pressure to sell pepper to make ends meet was not great. This put businesses at great risk when it was difficult to buy goods to deliver to  importing  businesses ,” Mr. Hiep shared.

HCM CITY: The price of Vietnamese pepper is expected to continue increasing in 2025 due to a global supply decline, while demand in major markets such as the United States and Europe remains stable, and China may start purchasing pepper from Vietnam after the Lunar New Year.

Industry insiders said as much at the annual meeting of the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association (VPSA) in HCM City late last week.

According to the International Pepper Community (IPC), global pepper production in 2024 decreased by about 4% (22,000 tonnes) compared to 2023, mainly due to a decline in production in Brazil and Vietnam.

The IPC forecasts that global pepper production in 2025 will continue to decline, due in part to the lower economic efficiency of pepper compared to other crops, leading many farmers to no longer choose pepper as a primary crop.

Climate change has also reduced pepper yields, while production costs have risen significantly.

Hoang Thi Lien, chairwoman of VPSA, said that last year, Vietnam exported 250,600 tonnes of pepper of all kinds worth a total value of more than US$1.3bil, with exports of black pepper accounting for US$1.1bil and white pepper US$200mil.

Although the pepper export volume in 2024 decreased by 5.1% compared to 2023, the export value surged by 45.4% thanks to a substantial increase in export prices, she added.

    Championing sustainability and innovation globally

The United States was Vietnam’s largest pepper export market in 2024, with 72,311 tonnes accounting for 28.9% of the total, marking a 33.2% increase from 2023.

The United States was followed by the United Arab Emirates, Germany, the Netherlands and India, she said.

Ho Tri Nhuan, director of Gohan Co Ltd, said in 2024, demand for pepper in the US market was initially expected to grow by only 5%.

However, due to concerns over rising prices, importers started stockpiling, increasing their purchases by up to 40%.

He noted that based on assessments of supply and demand, pepper exports in 2025 were expected to face both opportunities and uncertainties.

Stable market demand and reduced output in some regions would help maintain high pepper prices.

However, the extent of price increases would depend on the purchasing pace of key markets like the United States and China, he said.

According to Nhuan, pepper prices in 2025 are expected to rise further.

Nhuan said China was expected to increase its purchases as soon as Vietnam begins its main harvest season this spring, while the United States might buy at a slower pace due to high
