Update pepper information
According to the Customs Department, as of September 15, Vietnam's pepper exports reached 175,818 tons, worth nearly 1.2 billion USD, down 8.1% in volume but up 28.7% in value compared to the same period last year. This is the lowest export volume since 2018, but the highest turnover in the same period ever.
The average export price of pepper from the beginning of the year to September 15 reached 6,789 USD/ton, up 40% over the same period in 2024.
According to the Industry and Trade Newspaper, this reflects the trend of the international market being willing to pay high prices for Vietnamese pepper, especially shipments that meet sustainable standards and are deeply processed. When businesses focus on upgrading the value chain and exporting high standards, the domestic market also benefits, creating a new, stable pepper price level.
Vietnam accounts for more than 40% of global pepper production, but domestic planting areas are shrinking due to crop conversion and climate change. Production in Brazil, Indonesia, and India is also down due to extreme weather, while demand for the spice in emerging markets is still growing by 3-4% per year. Tight supply is the foundation for keeping world pepper prices and the latest domestic pepper prices high.
Not only supply and demand, financial and trade factors are also supporting the price increase trend. The US imposition of a 40% reciprocal tax on some imported raw materials forces businesses to purchase heavily domestically, pushing up domestic purchasing prices.
At the same time, the USD/VND exchange rate moves in a direction that is favorable for exports, encouraging businesses to close contracts early, pushing up the latest pepper prices in the final months of the year. However, trade policies and exchange rate fluctuations are also variables that can create unexpected adjustments.
The outlook for the next five years is positive if Vietnam takes advantage of opportunities from free trade agreements (FTAs) and sustainable consumption trends. Expanding organic pepper acreage, investing in deep processing, diversifying products and markets will help businesses increase export value. Experts recommend that the pepper industry should focus on quality standards, traceability and developing sustainable chains to maintain its competitive advantage.
However, challenges remain. Unpredictable climate changes, rising fertilizer and labor costs , and the risk of pepper diseases require the industry to proactively prevent them. Maintaining consistent quality and stable output are the decisive factors for Vietnam’s pepper prices to not only reach a short-term peak but also be sustainable in the 2025–2030 period.
To take advantage of opportunities and limit risks, the Vietnamese pepper industry needs a sustainable development strategy: close links between farmers - businesses - associations; promote deep processing; expand high-end markets such as the EU, the US, and Japan. At the same time, apply farming technology to reduce costs and improve quality. Only by controlling supply well, ensuring international standards and proactively marketing, can Vietnam maintain its position as an export powerhouse, bringing pepper prices to new levels on the world pepper price map.
The 2025-2030 outlook opens a new growth period for the Vietnamese pepper industry. Maintaining quality, proactively marketing and flexibly adapting to international fluctuations will be the key to helping domestic pepper prices reach new heights today, affirming the position of Vietnamese agricultural products on the world map.
