Pepper prices today, February 9, 2025, in the domestic market increased sharply in key localities, trading from 150,500 - 153,000 VND/kg.

Specifically, pepper price today in Gia Lai is at 154,000 VND/kg.

Pepper prices today in the provinces of Dong Nai (153,500 VND/kg); Dak Lak (156,000 VND/kg); Dak Nong (157,000 VND/kg); Ba Ria - Vung Tau (155,000 VND/kg) and Binh Phuoc (156,000 VND/kg).

Thus, pepper prices today increased sharply in key growing areas, increasing by 3,000 - 4,000 VND/kg. The highest pepper price is at 157,000 VND/kg.

After the Lunar New Year, domestic pepper prices recorded consecutive days of increase. Localities also began harvesting early-ripening pepper. Prices increased at the beginning of the season, making farmers excited and hopeful for a bumper crop with "good harvest and good price".

The highest price is in Dak Nong, approaching the 160,000 VND/kg mark. This locality is assessed by the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association to have the same output as last year.

Overall, this year's output is estimated by sources to increase compared to 2024. With high prices at the beginning of the season like now, in 2025 pepper is expected to continue to exceed billion USD in exports, and may possibly set a record high in exports ever.

Based on the supply-demand balance, pepper prices in 2025 are expected to remain high due to a decrease in supply, while demand in major markets such as the US and Europe remains stable. Pepper demand in the food and spice processing industries remains the main driver of the market.

According to a recent report by Ptexim, Vietnam’s total pepper export volume in 2024 is 250,600 tons, indicating a significant supply. However, the harvest has been steadily declining over the past 3-4 years due to shrinking planting areas as farmers switch to more profitable crops such as coffee and durian.

In addition, land prices in Vietnam have increased sharply from 2020 to 2023, causing many farmers to convert pepper growing land into real estate projects.

Significant fluctuations in pepper prices have also prompted many farmers to adopt intercropping by growing other crops along with pepper. This approach has led to a significant decline in the area under monoculture pepper cultivation over the past 4–5 years.

This trend is expected to continue, with pepper growing areas decreasing further by 2025. Ptexim forecasts that Vietnam’s pepper output in 2025 will decrease by about 5-10% compared to 2024. At the same time, inventories are at a five-year low and Vietnam will continue to import more pepper from other countries for processing and production.

In the world market, at the end of the most recent trading session, the International Pepper Community (IPC) listed the price of Lampung black pepper (Indonesia) at 7,276 USD/ton; the price of Brazilian black pepper ASTA 570 at 6,500 USD/ton; the price of Kuching black pepper (Malaysia) ASTA at 9,000 USD/ton.

Muntok white pepper price is 9,770 USD/ton; Malaysian ASTA white pepper price is at 11,600 USD/ton.

Vietnam black pepper price is traded at 6,500 USD/ton for 500 g/l; 550 g/l at 6,650 USD/ton; white pepper price at 9,550 USD/ton.

The International Pepper Community assessed that the pepper market in the first week of February showed mixed reactions, with only domestic Malaysian white pepper reported to have declined. Despite the weakening of the Indian Rupee against the USD, domestic and international Indian pepper prices continued to increase this week.

Many experts believe that in the coming years, global pepper production will not be enough to meet increasing consumer demand. Therefore, pepper prices are expected to increase sharply from 2024, opening a new period of development for this industry in Vietnam.

Currently, pepper farmers in Vietnam are showing more composure in the context of rising prices. Instead of massively expanding the area of pepper cultivation, they are focusing on quality, switching to sustainable farming and applying intercropping methods to reduce costs and better adapt to climate change.

Ms. Hoang Thi Lien - President of the Vietnam Pepper Association (VPSA), said that with the current situation, global pepper output is still not enough to meet the expected increase in demand in the next 3-5 years. In Vietnam, pepper, a strong crop, is entering a new price increase cycle to compensate for years of extremely low prices.

Mr. Hoang Phuoc Binh - Vice President of Chu Se Pepper Association (Gia Lai) said that pepper prices often tend to increase in cycles. For example, the previous price increase cycle started in 2010 and peaked in 2015.

By the end of 2024, businesses in the pepper industry recorded strong growth rates of 32-68%, with some companies even seeing a spike in export revenue of 150% compared to 2023. Farmers also had a bumper year, earning 60,000-100,000 VND when selling 1 kg of pepper.

According to records, after the Lunar New Year holiday, local farmers started harvesting the early-ripening pepper crop in some areas. Most of the pepper acreage will be harvested immediately after that. This year's harvest is estimated to be slower than previous years due to unfavorable weather conditions last year.

Currently, the pepper growing area in our country is about 113,000 hectares, with an estimated output of 190,000 tons. In 2024, businesses exported nearly 250,000 tons of pepper, worth 1.31 billion USD - a record in the past 8 years. Vietnam continues to hold the world's largest warehouse with output accounting for 40% and exports accounting for 60% globally.

Meanwhile, China, with low pepper inventories, is expected to boost imports right after the Lunar New Year, creating the possibility of price increases in the coming time, especially when Vietnam begins to harvest the main crop.

The continuous increase in coffee  prices  and reaching nearly 130,000 VND/kg is also one of the positive factors promoting pepper prices in the coming time.

Update pepper information

According to statistics from the Vietnam Pepper and Spices Association (VPSA), pepper export turnover in 2024 will reach 1.3 billion USD, an increase of more than 45% compared to 2023, exceeding the expectations of Vietnamese pepper processing enterprises, contributing to bringing pepper back to the list of billion-dollar agricultural export products.

Among pepper exporting enterprises, Olam is at the top, followed by Phuc Sinh, Nedspice Vietnam, Haprosimex JSC and Tran Chau.

Responding to  VNA , Mr. Phan Minh Thong, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Phuc Sinh Joint Stock Company, said that in the 30-year export journey, pepper prices in Vietnam increased sharply from 2010 to their peak in 2015. At that time, pepper became a billion-dollar industry and the price of 1 ton of pepper was equivalent to 6.5 taels of gold, or 10,700 USD.

This was also the reason why pepper was called “black gold” at that time. With this price increase, pepper growers began to speculate. In 2015, many farmers still had 3 tons and 5 tons of pepper stored at home, expecting the price to increase to 250 million VND/ton before selling.

But the development of all things will decline after the peak, so soon after that, pepper prices turned around and continuously decreased. By 2019, pepper prices were only 36 million VND/ton, "evaporating" 85% in 3.5 years. The decline in pepper prices caused most pepper growers to be in dire straits, neglecting and switching crops, creating a situation where demand exceeds supply from 2023 until now, so pepper is in short supply again.

By the end of 2023, the country's pepper output will reach about 170,000 tons and will decrease to about 160,000 tons in 2024, which is nearly half of the peak of 300,000 tons in 2015. The small output has helped pepper prices rebound, increasing export value in 2024.

On the side of producers and cooperatives, Mr. Nguyen Tan Cong, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Nam Yang Cooperative (Gia Lai) said that currently, after going through many lessons learned, instead of choosing pure cultivation, people now focus on models of growing pepper intercropped, multicropped with coffee and fruit trees.

Developing pepper in the direction of intercropping and polyculture will be sustainable, thereby helping farmers reduce investment costs and limit disease risks, moving towards safe agriculture. At that time, people will not overuse pesticides and chemical fertilizers on crops, instead using biological products and organic fertilizers to bring durability to the garden, helping to improve the quality of pepper products to enter the world market.

Update pepper information

Many previous forecasts have said that in the next few years, global pepper production will still not be enough to meet consumer demand. Therefore, prices will start to increase sharply from 2024, helping this industry in Vietnam enter a new golden age.

“With the current situation, global pepper production cannot meet the increasing demand in the next 3-5 years. In our country, this strong grain is entering a new price increase cycle, making up for the years when prices were too low,” said Ms. Hoang Thi Lien, Chairwoman of the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association (VPSA).

In pepper growing areas in our country, farmers are also calmer in the face of price fever. Instead of growing pepper purely and massively expanding the area, they now focus more on quality, switch to sustainable farming, choose intercropping to reduce investment costs and adapt to climate change.

In addition to exporting  raw products , businesses  also aim to make value-added products to target niche markets, while building a high-quality Vietnamese pepper brand, according to  Vietnamnet Newspaper .

Domestic pepper price updated on February 1, 2025

The Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association forecasts that global pepper output in 2025 will continue to decrease compared to 2024, marking the fourth consecutive year of decline since 2022. This reflects the fact that pepper is no longer the main crop of many farmers. In addition, climate change with extreme weather events has reduced productivity and increased the cost of maintaining pepper production.

However, according to experts, pepper prices in Vietnam are still stable at around 140,000 - 150,000 VND/kg in the last months of 2024 and early 2025. This is a signal that prices will not fluctuate strongly, even though the market is facing a decrease in output from some major producing countries.

Global pepper supply will continue to decline in 2025, while demand from major markets such as the US and Europe will remain stable, creating momentum for prices to remain high. Meanwhile, China is currently facing low pepper inventories and may start buying again after the Lunar New Year, when Vietnam's main harvest begins.

Farmers in Gia Lai province harvest pepper.

In 2024, China will reduce pepper imports from Vietnam by 82.4% but increase imports from Indonesia by 76.8%. However, this increase in imports is still not enough to meet total consumption demand in China. Pepper inventories in this market are low, while expectations of a price decrease have not come true as prices have remained stable at VND140,000/kg for the past 3 months. It is forecasted that China will probably wait until Vietnam's main harvest (after Tet) to start buying again.

Brazil’s pepper output is forecast to recover in 2025, while Indonesia may see a drop in output due to investment difficulties and unfavorable weather conditions. India, a major consumer, is also forecast to see a drop in output due to the impact of floods, leading farmers to limit investment and liquidate inventories as domestic prices fall.

Update pepper information

According to IPC, in 2023 India surpassed Brazil to become the second largest pepper producing country in the world, however, most of India's pepper production is consumed domestically.

In 2024, India's pepper output will reach 125,000 tons and is the country with the highest increase in pepper production of about 7% (8,000 tons) compared to 2023.

However, the IPC forecasts that the situation will not be optimistic in 2025 when the output reduction could be up to 38%. The reason is the impact of floods and rains, leading to farmers limiting investment and liquidating inventories when domestic prices decrease.

As of November 2024, India exported 18,196 tons of pepper, an increase of 30% (4,200 tons) compared to 13,997 tons in the same period in 2023. Of which, the US is the largest export market with a volume of 7,130 tons, a sharp increase of 39.2% over the same period.

Meanwhile, India also  imported   43,879 tons of pepper from other countries in the first 11 months of 2024, a sharp increase of 37.8% compared to the same period in 2023. Sri Lanka, Vietnam and Brazil are the three main suppliers to India. Accordingly, imports from Sri Lanka reached 21,886 tons, up 75.3%; from Vietnam reached 9,809 tons, up 2%; from Brazil reached 6,466 tons, up 39.8%.

Domestic consumption of pepper increased significantly last year to 131,000 tonnes due to increased demand from masala manufacturers, the Indian Pepper and Spices Trade Association (IPSTA) said.

According to IPC data, the FOB export price of black pepper from India recorded an increase of 11%, the lowest increase among producing countries, from an average of USD 6,713/ton in 2023 to USD 7,460/ton in 2024.
