How much does Vietnam buy Brazilian pepper?

In the midst of the crisis, the bachelor went to the mountains to "reverse" to collect billions of money
Despite recording an increase of 19%, Brazil's pepper export price to Vietnam is the lowest price among the top 15 importing countries of this country?

Vietnam is the largest pepper exporter to the United States

According to the International Trade Center (ITC),  pepper exports  from the world's main producing countries have contradictory patterns. In the first half of 2024, the two leading exporting countries in the world, Vietnam and Brazil, decreased by 6.8% and 6.0%, respectively. In the same direction, Malaysia's exports also decreased by 8.1%, while Indonesia and India's exports increased by 48.3% and 34.1%.

Brazil's main export markets include: Vietnam
Vietnam is Brazil's largest pepper buyer

Compared to the same period in 2023, in the first 6 months of 2024, the average FOB price of black pepper and white pepper in most main producing countries increased sharply, except India. Specifically, the average FOB price of black pepper increased by 27% and the average FOB price of white pepper increased by 14% over the same period last year. The strongest increase was recorded in Brazilian black pepper, followed by Vietnam and Indonesia.

Global pepper trade from the beginning of the year until now recorded a decrease of more than 20% compared to the same period in 2023. The largest decrease came from the Chinese market, down 85%, mainly because this country reduced imports from Vietnam.

The United States  is the largest pepper consuming market in the world, of which Vietnam is the largest exporter to the United States accounting for 75.8%, followed by India accounting for 8.5%, Indonesia accounting for 8.4%. and Brazil accounts for 4.0%.

The price of Brazilian pepper exported to Vietnam increased by 19%

In Brazil, the harvest ended in the states of Espírito Santo and Bahia with yields 10% lower than last year due to the impact of the El Nino drought phenomenon at the beginning of the year.

Brazil is continuing to harvest in the Espirito Santos region and in November in the Para region, it is estimated that the whole country will collect about 60 thousand more tons. Climate change (La Nina) will affect the production of Brazilian pepper in the coming months.

According to some farmers in the Espirito Santos region, the harvest in 2024 may be 25-30% lower due to the heat causing most of the first cotton to fall and the ratio of fruit set to buds of the second and second cotton blooms. Phase 3 is quite low so it is expected to only reach about 70% compared to last year. Overall, the whole country in 2024 may decrease by 20-25% compared to 2023.

In the first 6 months of 2024, Brazilian pepper exports reached 37,181 tons, turnover reached 141.7 million USD, down 6.0% in volume but up 21.4% in value compared to the same period last year.

Brazil's main export markets include: Vietnam reached 5,910 tons, accounting for 15.9%, down 21.5% over the same period. Next is the market reaching India: 3,892 tons, accounting for 10.5%, an increase of 47.2%; Pakistan reached 3,703 tons, accounting for 10.0%, an increase of 63.3%; Senegal reached 3,659 tons, accounting for 9.8%, down 19.6% and Morocco reached 3,565 tons, accounting for 9.6%, down 9.5%...

Exports to Egypt, the Netherlands, and Mexico decreased while exports to the UAE and Germany increased, especially exports to the United States increased by 701.1% to 1,402 tons, however compared to the same period in 2022, it reached 3,002 tons. export volume decreased by 53.3%.

The average Brazilian pepper export price in the first 6 months of the year reached 3,810 USD/ton, up 29.3% over the same period last year, of which the export price in June increased by 31.1% compared to January 2024. Notably, the average price of Brazilian pepper exports to Vietnam reached 3,488 USD/ton, an increase of 19.0% over the same period in 2023 and this is the lowest price among the top 15 importing countries, lower than the UAE. : 4.0%; India: 7.8%; Netherlands: 8.8%; United States: 9.2% and Germany: 17.5%.

In Vietnam, Ms. Hoang Thi Lien - President of the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association - said that Vietnam's pepper exports  in the first 6 months of 2024 reached 142.5 thousand tons compared to the year's harvest. 2024 will reach about 170 thousand tons, the remaining output is estimated to reach about 28 thousand tons.

Inventories from the 2023 crop combined with imports in 2024 of about 40-45 thousand tons (including quota imports) show that the source of exported goods from August until the end of the year will be lower than every year and until March. /2025 when the 2025 crop is expected to be harvested. It is forecasted that pepper prices  will have unusual fluctuations such as on June 11, the price increased sharply by 20,000 VND in the morning but dropped sharply again in the afternoon.

The domestic pepper market in the early days of August was still trading around the 147,000 - 150,000 VND/kg mark although many comments about supply shortages in the country and the world were still being made. Currently, both sellers and buyers are waiting for the latest market movements when Indonesia is expected to harvest the pepper crop in August.

Some experts continue to comment that signs of supply shortage compared to demand will continue to be recognized and reflected by the market in the coming time until the end of the season. Currently, Brazil has 3 sterilized pepper factories and is building 2 more factories and will be completed in 2025. In the future, Brazilian pepper will compete better with Vietnam, so imported supply will less, so Vietnamese businesses need to proactively source raw materials.

Pepper market on July 25, 2024

Pepper market on July 25, 2024: Average price 149,000-150,000 VND/kg

According to official data, Vietnam is no longer the largest supplier to China in the first half of this year

Pepper price today July 25 is in the range of 148,000 - 150,000 VND/kg. Pepper prices early this morning decreased by 1,000 VND/kg in Ba Ria - Vung Tau and Dak Lak. According to official data, Vietnam is no longer the largest supplier to China in the first half of this year.

Experts say that continuous heavy rains in the last days of July help ease concerns about affecting pepper output in the coming season. Thereby pushing the market down slightly.

According to data from China Customs, in June 2024, the country imported more than 2,000 tons of pepper, 2.5 times more than in May and up 40% over the same period last year.

Among pepper supplies to China from abroad, Indonesia accounts for more than half with 1,375 tons, more than twice the same period last year. This is the largest source of pepper for China through official channels in June and the first 6 months of the year.

The average price of imported pepper in the Chinese market in June was more than 4,400 USD/ton, up 22% over the same period last year but down 7.4% compared to May.

According to official data, Vietnam was the second largest pepper supplier to China (after Indonesia) in the first half of this year with 1,515 tons, down 7.6% over the same period last year. Pepper market on July 24, 2024: Price dropped back to 147,000 VND/kg

Sanitation prices today, August 6: prices are "dangerous", prices are limited, picture 1

Pepper price today 24/7 is in the range of 147,000 - 148,000 VND/kg, down 1,000-2,000 VND compared to yesterday. Indonesia harvests pepper in July with expected good output. While production estimates are good, they may not have much of an impact on prices as speculators have tried to buy up all available material.

At the end of the most recent trading session, the International Pepper Community (IPC) listed Lampung (Indonesia) black pepper price at 7,191 USD/ton; Brazilian black pepper price ASTA 570 is at 7,125 USD/ton; Kuching (Malaysia) ASTA black pepper price is 7,500 USD/ton.

Muntok white pepper price 9,157 USD/ton; Malaysian ASTA white pepper price is at 8,800 USD/ton.

The price of Vietnamese black pepper is trading at 6,000 USD/ton for 500 g/l type; type 550 g/l at 6,600 USD/ton; White pepper price is at 8,800 USD/ton. IPC continues to maintain pepper prices in other countries.

In the latest weekly report, IPC stated that Chinese white pepper prices recorded an increase. Prices increased sharply in the past month in Hainan, China due to expected low output and domestic speculation.

According to surveys, in recent years, the pepper growing area on Hainan Island - China has been about 330,000 mu (Chinese measurement unit, 1 mu = 666.7 m2), accounting for more than 90% of the total planted area. target of this country.

Although it is China's main pepper production area, Hainan Island is not the main import-export trade area, pepper trading activities are mainly carried out in Yulin - Guangxi and Bozhou - An. Huy.

This year in China's main pepper production area, crop failure is also worrying, and speculation is also hoarding goods. Since the beginning of the year, the amount of pepper exported from Vietnam to this market has decreased sharply. According to data, China still imports about 50,000 thousand tons of pepper from Vietnam every year.

According to experts, perhaps China and European traders are waiting for information and new releases from the harvest in Indonesia. If the crop in this Southeast Asian country is less favorable, low output and prolonged domestic speculation in China will force them to increase imports of Vietnamese pepper again. This will be the year-end growth driver for Vietnamese pepper.

According to the Center for Industry and Trade Information (Ministry of Industry and Trade), Indonesia harvested pepper in July with expected good yields in most key growing areas. Scattered rains during the growing stage are beneficial for pepper fruit formation. While production estimates are good, they may not have much of an impact on prices as speculators have tried to buy up all available material.

Brazil's widespread crop loss: What opportunities are there for the Vietnamese pepper industry?

*Vietnamese pepper prices are forecast to have room to increase in the context of widespread Brazilian pepper crop failures for the third consecutive year.

*Pepper price 'evaporated' by nearly 30,000 VND/kg after reaching a record high:
What is the reason?

*Pepper exports in the first 6 months of 2024: Output decreases, turnover increases
There are many new developments, what will be the future price of pepper?

Opens up opportunities for Vietnamese pepper

According to new data announced by the Brazilian Government, the country's pepper exports in June 2024 only reached 5,333 tons, down 9.7% compared to May 2024. In the first 6 months of this year, Brazil exported 37,181 tons of pepper, down 6% compared to the same period in 2023.
The main reason why Brazilian pepper exports decreased was due to a sharp decrease in harvest output due to the effects of drought and disease. Brazil's two largest pepper growing regions, Espirito Santos and Para, are expected to enter new harvests in August and November, respectively. However, experts predict that this year's harvest in these two regions may decrease by 20-30% compared to 2023, down to only about 60,000 tons.

Therefore, NedSpice forecasts that Brazil's total pepper output this year will decrease by 18.2% compared to 2023, to 90,000 tons. Brazil is currently the second largest producer and exporter of black pepper in the world after Vietnam, accounting for 17 - 18% of the total global supply. Therefore, the continuous crop failure in Brazil will cause a global spillover effect, which is expected to push up global pepper prices in the last months of this year when pepper supply from other large producing countries such as Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia... also all declined significantly.
Brazil's crop failure is expected to open up opportunities for the Vietnamese pepper industry to increase market share and further strengthen its position in key markets such as the US, China and Europe. However, Vietnamese businesses may also have difficulty finding alternative sources of supply for Brazilian pepper, especially when freight rates are still high and maritime congestion has not been completely resolved. to.

In addition, Brazil's pepper export price to Vietnam in the first half of this year was also significantly lower than Vietnam's average export price to the international market. Therefore, the shortage of imported pepper supply from Brazil may cause domestic pepper prices to increase in the coming months.

Brazilian pepper exports decreased sharply this year due to the impact of drought and disease. This is expected to push global pepper prices up in the last months of this year, creating opportunities for the Vietnamese pepper industry to increase its market share. However, Vietnamese businesses also need solutions to cope with supply shortages and price fluctuations.

Commenting on the market, Vice Chairman of Chu Se Pepper Association (Gia Lai) Hoang Phuoc Binh said that currently pepper prices are in a state of "shaking", meaning sometimes up, sometimes down, but looking at The general trend will continue to increase. The main reason is that the supply of pepper in Vietnam is currently exhausted because the output of the 2023 - 2024 crop also decreased quite a lot compared to the previous crop.

The whole year's export forecast is more than 1 billion USD

Besides, according to data from the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association (VPSA), as of July 15, 2024, the total export turnover of pepper reached 690.7 million USD and imports reached 74 million USD. 1 million USD (mainly raw materials). Thereby, the entire industry had a trade surplus of 616.6 million USD.

Regarding exports, in the first 6 months of the year, Vietnam exported 142,586 tons of pepper of all kinds, worth 634.2 million USD, down 6.8% in volume but up 30.5% in turnover. Specifically, the amount of black pepper exported reached 125,959 tons, worth 539.9 million USD; White pepper reached 16,627 tons, worth 94.3 million USD.

The highlight in pepper exports in the first 6 months of the year is the high selling price. The average price of exported black pepper reached 4,365 USD/ton, white pepper reached 5,983 USD/ton, an increase of 922 USD/ton for black pepper and 1,028 USD/ton for white pepper compared to the first 6 months of 2023.

In the domestic market, in recent days, pepper prices have fluctuated around 150,000 VND/kg, twice as high as in 2023.

VPSA stated that the reason why Vietnam's pepper exports increased in the first 6 months of the year was due to the scarcity of pepper supply in the world market. Currently, Vietnam ended its harvest in March, while the harvest of Brazil - the world's second largest pepper exporter - just started in August.

In addition, pepper prices increased because demand on the world market remained high, while supply was limited.

With high growth momentum in the first 6 months of the year, plus export prices continuing to be high, VPSA forecasts that Vietnam pepper exports this year will reach over 1 billion USD, thereby bringing pepper back to normal. billion-dollar industry group for the first time since 2017.

This is a positive signal for Vietnam's pepper industry, affirming Vietnam's position as the world's leading pepper exporter.

Pepper market on July 22, 2024

Pepper market on July 22, 2024: Increased again to 149,000 VND/kg

14-16-16_gi_tieu_2020

Updated pepper price today July 22, 2024 average at 149,000-150,000 VND/kg.

Currently, pepper prices are in a "shaking" state, sometimes up, sometimes down, but in general the trend will continue to increase. According to Mr. Hoang Phuoc Binh - Vice Chairman of Chu Se Pepper Association (Gia Lai), not only this year, pepper prices will continue to be high for many years to come, because each price increase cycle usually lasts for a long time. about 10 years.

World pepper prices  today

At the end of the most recent trading session, the International Pepper Community (IPC) listed Lampung (Indonesia) black pepper price at 7,191 USD/ton, down 0.25%; Brazilian black pepper price ASTA 570 is at 7,125 USD/ton; Kuching (Malaysia) ASTA black pepper price is 7,500 USD/ton.

Muntok white pepper price was 9,157 USD/ton, down 0.24%; Malaysian ASTA white pepper price is at 8,800 USD/ton.

Vietnam black pepper prices simultaneously kept their prices at a high mark, trading at 6,000 USD/ton for 500 g/l type; type 550 g/l at 6,600 USD/ton; White pepper price is at 8,800 USD/ton. According to the International Pepper Association (IPC), pepper prices in Brazil and Vietnam remain unchanged. Indonesian black pepper price decreased compared to yesterday.

By the end of 2023, the pepper area in Dak Nong province will reach 33,789 hectares, output will reach 70,685 tons, an increase of 28,458 tons compared to 2018. Currently, Dak Nong ranks first in the Central Highlands region and the whole country in terms of pepper planting area. pepper, output ranks second in the country (after Dak Lak province).

Dak Nong will maintain a pepper growing area of about 34 thousand hectares by 2025, with an output of about 52 thousand tons, and by 2030 the area will reach about 33.6 thousand hectares and an output of about 60 thousand tons; Form and develop 4 pepper production areas applying high technology, concentrated production areas with an area of 3,049 hectares in key pepper production areas of the province.

Although pepper prices are high, localities and even people are currently very cautious in expanding pepper growing areas. The reason is partly because the value of pepper is no longer as high as other crops. Pepper has long been no longer considered "black gold".

In the Southeast, Dong Nai is one of the largest pepper growing provinces with about 11,000 hectares. In 2018, the pepper area of Dong Nai province reached 19,000 hectares. Many years of low pepper prices caused this province to lose 8,000 hectares of pepper cultivation to switch to higher value crops. This year, although the price doubled, people are still cautious about expanding the area.

The general direction of the industry is to produce clean pepper in a sustainable manner, apply high technology, and improve product quality.

Brazil's pepper exports reached a record high of 92,065 tons in 2021, but then decreased to 86,359 tons in 2022 and 80,725 tons in 2023.

Reduced output from Brazil and Vietnam, the world's two leading pepper producing countries, has pushed world pepper prices to continuously increase in recent times.

Some experts believe that signs of supply shortage compared to demand will continue to be recognized and reflected by the market in the coming time until the end of the season.

Meanwhile, rapidly rising freight costs and port congestion in Asia are also impacting prices in import markets, and can cause shipping delays. This causes prices to increase in the medium and long term.
