Update pepper information

According to data from the International Trade Center (ITC), in March, pepper  imports   into the US reached 6,741 tons, up 13.4% over the previous month and nearly 17% over the same period last year. The main supplying markets include: Vietnam with 3,991 tons, Indonesia with 1,515 tons and India: 815 tons.

By the end of the first quarter, US pepper imports reached 21,586 tons, worth nearly 159 million USD, up 8.7% in volume and 66.6% in value over the same period in 2024.

Vietnam was the main pepper supplier to the US market in the first quarter of the year with a volume of 13,036 tons, worth 98.5 million USD, down 13.6% in volume but up 38.4% in value over the same period. Vietnam's market share in total US pepper imports fell to 60.4% from 76% in the same period.

The next largest supplying markets were Indonesia, accounting for 20.9% of the market share, reaching 4,522 tons, up 241.7%; India, accounting for 10.1% of the market share, reaching 2,181 tons, up 18.5% over the same period.

Meanwhile, according to Ptexim, pepper prices showed a downward trend from the beginning of the week due to weak demand and rising concerns over tensions between India and Pakistan. However, the market recovered as demand picked up again.

Demand has improved in the EU, Asia and the US. Notably, the Chinese market has started buying again, although in small quantities. However, farmers are under little pressure to sell after the harvest and are expected to continue to stockpile in the coming period.

Drewry’s global container index fell 1% to $2,076 per 40-foot container in the week to May 10. That’s 80% below the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic but still 46% above the pre-pandemic average of 2019.

Forecasts suggest freight rates will stabilize as shipping lines adjust capacity in response to low booking volumes from China.
