According to Comexstat, Brazil exported 4,339 tons of pepper in January 2025, with an export turnover of 27.1 million USD. Compared to the same period in 2024, the export volume decreased by 28.1% while the turnover increased by 36.9%.

Vietnam is Brazil's largest export market, reaching 1,242 tons, accounting for 28.6%. Followed by the markets: UAE: 432 tons, India: 413 tons, Senegal: 396 tons and Egypt: 367 tons.

In the domestic market, according to Dak Nong Newspaper, Dak Nong farmers are currently focusing on harvesting pepper. Most of them are excited because the pepper price is high. This has motivated them to continue investing in and taking care of their pepper gardens, improving product quality.

The general psychology of farmers in the 2025 pepper harvest is excited and happy because the selling price has increased. However, the productivity of farmers' gardens in some areas has decreased due to the impact of the weather.

Statistics from the agricultural sector show that in recent years, the pepper growing area in Dak Nong has grown steadily at 34,000 hectares. The average yield of the whole province is about 2.4 tons/ha, with a total annual output of about 70,000 tons.

Good news about coffee and pepper prices at the beginning of the new year of At Ty 2025 is creating excitement and motivation for farmers. Dak Nong farmers, along with farmers in the Central Highlands, are expecting a year of good prices for key crops, including coffee and pepper.

Vietnamese pepper prices are surging past US$6.4 per kilogram due to strong demand from China and the United States, according to the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association (VPSA).

On February 12, pepper prices in Vietnam increased by VND3,000-4,500 ($0.12-0.18) per kilogram compared to the previous day, pushing the rates up to VND164,000 ($6.41) per kilogram.

According to VPSA chairwoman Hoang Thi Lien, the recent spike in pepper prices is owed to supply and demand dynamics, particularly a rise in purchase orders from key markets such as China and the U.S..

“Vietnam's pepper market experienced a temporary halt in trading during the Tet [Lunar New Year] holiday [last month], leading to a supply bottleneck. After the holiday, demand surged, causing prices to climb," Lien explained.

“Additionally, businesses and traders are eager to secure fresh supplies from the most recent harvest season in the Central Highlands region.”

On Wednesday, domestic pepper prices varied across Vietnamese provinces.

In Gia Lai, pepper was selling for VND162,500 ($6.36) per kilogram, marking a VND4,500 per kilogram increase from Tuesday.

In Ba Ria-Vung Tau and Dak Nong Provinces, prices rose by VND3,000 per kilogram to VND161,000 ($6.30) and VND163,000 ($6.34) per kilogram, respectively.

Similarly, Dak Lak and Binh Phuoc Provinces saw price increases of over VND4,000 per kilogram, reaching VND164,000 ($6.41) and VND162,000 ($6.33) per kilogram, respectively.

The global pepper market remains unpredictable, with prices stabilized in some regions and high in others.

According to the International Pepper Community, Indonesia's pepper prices have slightly declined, with Lampung black pepper priced at $7,251 per metric ton, down $14, and Muntok white pepper at $10,010 per metric ton, down $18.

00:33 / 01:54

Meanwhile, Malaysia's pepper market remains stable, with black pepper at $9,000 per metric ton and white pepper at $11,600 per metric ton. In Brazil, pepper prices have jumped by $200 to $6,700 per metric ton.

Vietnam's pepper exports have remained stable and strong, with black pepper averaging $6,500 per metric ton and white pepper averaging $9,550 per metric ton.

According to experts, reduced pepper output in some regions may keep prices elevated throughout 2025, as global demand remains steady.

Notably, purchases from key markets such as the U.S. and China have spiked by 10-15 percent, signaling a promising year for Vietnamese pepper farmers and exporters.

Vietnam exported 7,313 metric tons of pepper in the first half of January, generating $48.3 million in revenue, according to the General Department of Vietnam Customs.

While export volume declined by three percent compared to the same period in 2024, revenue surged by 61.86 percent, reflecting strong price growth.

Exporters report that China’s demand for Vietnamese pepper is rising, partly due to re-exports to India.

Other major markets, including the U.S. and the EU, continue to place significant orders for both short-term and long-term deliveries.

With favorable pricing, strong market conditions, and rising global demand, 2025 is expected to be a lucrative year for Vietnamese pepper producers and exporters.

Currently, the Central Highlands region – encompassing the five provinces of Lam Dong, Dak Nong, Dak Lak, Kon Tum, and Gia Lai – has entered its pepper harvest season.

Pepper prices skyrocket after Tet holiday

After the Lunar New Year holiday, pepper prices skyrocketed and today (February 10) jumped to nearly 170,000 VND/kg.

In the Central Highlands provinces, when the coffee crop has just ended right after the Tet holiday, farmers are preparing to start the pepper harvest. Mr. Luu Nhu Binh, Director of Doan Ket Cooperative (Dak Song District, Dak Nong Province) said: In the past few days, farmers have been very excited because pepper prices are increasing day by day. Currently, the price is at 160,000 VND/kg, the highest in many years. In particular, this is the stage of preparing to enter the pepper harvest, but the price has increased, which is very good news, people are excited about the new harvest.

Before Tet, pepper prices remained high at 145,000 - 147,000 VND/kg. In the first week after Tet, pepper prices increased day by day and by the end of last week, many places reached 160,000 VND/kg, nearly double the same period last year.

The price of Vietnamese black pepper is at 6,500 - 6,650 USD/ton; the price of Indonesian Lampung black pepper is 7,276 USD/ton; Brazilian ASTA 570 black pepper is 6,500 USD/ton; and Malaysian Kuching black pepper is 9,000 USD/ton.

Vietnam's white pepper price remains at the lowest level of 9,550 USD/ton; Malaysian ASTA white pepper price is 11,600 USD/ton; Indonesian Muntok white pepper is 9,770 USD/ton.

On the afternoon of February 10, answering Thanh Nien, Mr. Phan Minh Thong - Chairman of Phuc Sinh Group, who is known as the "king of Vietnamese pepper" said: The price of 160,000 VND was the price last week. Today, the price of pepper has increased to 168,000 - 170,000 VND/kg. The skyrocketing price of pepper is due to high consumption demand while our supply and inventory are limited. Meanwhile, the harvest season is delayed by about 1 month compared to usual due to changes in the weather. Those are the main features of the Vietnamese and world pepper markets in the past few days.

Ms. Hoang Thi Lien - President of the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association (VPSA) was more cautious when sharing that the increase in pepper prices has many different causes. This agency is continuing to 'listen' to know the exact cause before making any analysis.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, in January 2025, Vietnam's pepper exports reached 13,000 tons, down 25.6% over the same period last year; the value reached 87 million USD, up nearly 24%, the average pepper export price in January reached 6,663 USD/ton, up 66.4% over the same period in 2024.

In 2024, Vietnam's pepper exports will reach nearly 250,000 tons, down 6% in volume but with a value of 1.3 billion USD, up 44% compared to 2023. The average export price of pepper is 5,271 USD/ton, up nearly 54% compared to the previous year.

Update pepper information

According to data from the Indian Ministry of Commerce, the country's pepper  exports   in the 11 months of 2024 reached 18,196 tons, up 30% over the same period in 2023.

However, the country also  imported   43,879 tons of pepper of all kinds during the same period, up 37.8%. The main sources of pepper supply were Sri Lanka and Vietnam, with volumes reaching 21,894 tons and 9,911 tons, up 2.5% and 75.4% over the same period in 2023.

Despite playing a vital role in global trade, India's black pepper exports have been declining over the past several decades, Thehindubusinessline  reported.

According to a study from Kerala Agricultural University, duty-free import of black pepper from Vietnam via Sri Lanka under the South Asian Free Trade Agreement (SAFTA) has made imported black pepper cheaper than domestic prices.

As a result, exporters specializing in value-added products have become increasingly dependent on imported pepper. This, coupled with the increase in global pepper production, has led to a fall in prices in the Indian market, negatively impacting smallholder farmers.

Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu are the leading pepper producing states in India, with Karnataka having the highest average yield. In Kerala, Idukki district leads in terms of area, production and productivity. However, the pace of expansion of pepper cultivation in Kerala has slowed down due to ageing of the crop, poor management and harvesting challenges.

In that context, domestic consumption is considered the "savior" of the Indian pepper industry.

Once the world leader in black pepper production and export, with 75% of its output exported in the 1980s, the share has fallen to 40% in the last decade. Domestic consumption now accounts for more than 80% of India’s total pepper production, largely due to the liberalization of trade policies.

After 2000, there has been a significant change in the composition of black pepper exports from India. Earlier, the majority of pepper exported was unground pepper. Currently, nearly 50% of the total value of black pepper exports from India comes from ground or milled products.

The growth rate of black pepper exports has been declining over the decades, while the growth rate of imports has been increasing. India’s black pepper exports have become more diversified, showing a decline in the share of raw products and an increase in the share of value-added processed products.

Pepper prices today, February 9, 2025, in the domestic market increased sharply in key localities, trading from 150,500 - 153,000 VND/kg.

Specifically, pepper price today in Gia Lai is at 154,000 VND/kg.

Pepper prices today in the provinces of Dong Nai (153,500 VND/kg); Dak Lak (156,000 VND/kg); Dak Nong (157,000 VND/kg); Ba Ria - Vung Tau (155,000 VND/kg) and Binh Phuoc (156,000 VND/kg).

Thus, pepper prices today increased sharply in key growing areas, increasing by 3,000 - 4,000 VND/kg. The highest pepper price is at 157,000 VND/kg.

After the Lunar New Year, domestic pepper prices recorded consecutive days of increase. Localities also began harvesting early-ripening pepper. Prices increased at the beginning of the season, making farmers excited and hopeful for a bumper crop with "good harvest and good price".

The highest price is in Dak Nong, approaching the 160,000 VND/kg mark. This locality is assessed by the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association to have the same output as last year.

Overall, this year's output is estimated by sources to increase compared to 2024. With high prices at the beginning of the season like now, in 2025 pepper is expected to continue to exceed billion USD in exports, and may possibly set a record high in exports ever.

Based on the supply-demand balance, pepper prices in 2025 are expected to remain high due to a decrease in supply, while demand in major markets such as the US and Europe remains stable. Pepper demand in the food and spice processing industries remains the main driver of the market.

According to a recent report by Ptexim, Vietnam’s total pepper export volume in 2024 is 250,600 tons, indicating a significant supply. However, the harvest has been steadily declining over the past 3-4 years due to shrinking planting areas as farmers switch to more profitable crops such as coffee and durian.

In addition, land prices in Vietnam have increased sharply from 2020 to 2023, causing many farmers to convert pepper growing land into real estate projects.

Significant fluctuations in pepper prices have also prompted many farmers to adopt intercropping by growing other crops along with pepper. This approach has led to a significant decline in the area under monoculture pepper cultivation over the past 4–5 years.

This trend is expected to continue, with pepper growing areas decreasing further by 2025. Ptexim forecasts that Vietnam’s pepper output in 2025 will decrease by about 5-10% compared to 2024. At the same time, inventories are at a five-year low and Vietnam will continue to import more pepper from other countries for processing and production.

In the world market, at the end of the most recent trading session, the International Pepper Community (IPC) listed the price of Lampung black pepper (Indonesia) at 7,276 USD/ton; the price of Brazilian black pepper ASTA 570 at 6,500 USD/ton; the price of Kuching black pepper (Malaysia) ASTA at 9,000 USD/ton.

Muntok white pepper price is 9,770 USD/ton; Malaysian ASTA white pepper price is at 11,600 USD/ton.

Vietnam black pepper price is traded at 6,500 USD/ton for 500 g/l; 550 g/l at 6,650 USD/ton; white pepper price at 9,550 USD/ton.

The International Pepper Community assessed that the pepper market in the first week of February showed mixed reactions, with only domestic Malaysian white pepper reported to have declined. Despite the weakening of the Indian Rupee against the USD, domestic and international Indian pepper prices continued to increase this week.

Many experts believe that in the coming years, global pepper production will not be enough to meet increasing consumer demand. Therefore, pepper prices are expected to increase sharply from 2024, opening a new period of development for this industry in Vietnam.

Currently, pepper farmers in Vietnam are showing more composure in the context of rising prices. Instead of massively expanding the area of pepper cultivation, they are focusing on quality, switching to sustainable farming and applying intercropping methods to reduce costs and better adapt to climate change.

Ms. Hoang Thi Lien - President of the Vietnam Pepper Association (VPSA), said that with the current situation, global pepper output is still not enough to meet the expected increase in demand in the next 3-5 years. In Vietnam, pepper, a strong crop, is entering a new price increase cycle to compensate for years of extremely low prices.

Mr. Hoang Phuoc Binh - Vice President of Chu Se Pepper Association (Gia Lai) said that pepper prices often tend to increase in cycles. For example, the previous price increase cycle started in 2010 and peaked in 2015.

By the end of 2024, businesses in the pepper industry recorded strong growth rates of 32-68%, with some companies even seeing a spike in export revenue of 150% compared to 2023. Farmers also had a bumper year, earning 60,000-100,000 VND when selling 1 kg of pepper.

According to records, after the Lunar New Year holiday, local farmers started harvesting the early-ripening pepper crop in some areas. Most of the pepper acreage will be harvested immediately after that. This year's harvest is estimated to be slower than previous years due to unfavorable weather conditions last year.

Currently, the pepper growing area in our country is about 113,000 hectares, with an estimated output of 190,000 tons. In 2024, businesses exported nearly 250,000 tons of pepper, worth 1.31 billion USD - a record in the past 8 years. Vietnam continues to hold the world's largest warehouse with output accounting for 40% and exports accounting for 60% globally.
